Gluten-free Christmas Cake at Cafe Ilan in Gyeongi-do
* Cafe Ilan is advertised as gluten-free, using rice flour instead of wheat flour
I know most people probably don’t travel to Seoul to eat cake but rather Korean food (but you should try out cake too!)
In Korea, it is typical to order a Christmas cake in advance or buy one on the day, even though popular cake shops and most gluten-free cafés/bakeries only accept reservations in advance.
Cafe Ilan is not in Seoul, but Beomgye in Gyeongi-do, metro line 4 (you might pass Beomgye, if you take a trip to Suwon) and I have been ordering gluten-free Christmas cake from them two years in a row now. That is why I wanted to give them a quick shout-out!😊
Once I visit the café again, I’ll take more pictures. Beomgye itself might not be extraordinary enough to visit, especially if you are only for a limited time in Seoul. But if you are somewhere close around, I recommend Cafe Ilan for a short coffee and cake break. (For ordering whole cakes in advance, contact them on Kakaotalk).
Also, which Christmas cake in the pictures below do you like better? I’m a fan of the Strawberry Chocolat Gâteau 2025 while Mr. Sogumbbang really liked the Santa cake we ordered 2024. (They offer a similar variety of cakes every year. The owner is a bit shy but a very kind person, who even gifted me a heart-shaped candle😊)
